What Is an Extraction?
When restorative procedures are not enough to save a tooth, it may need to be pulled or extracted. In many cases, a patient can have a tooth extracted with little or no discomfort.
Extractions can range from a single tooth or removing multiple teeth at once. Some cases in which a tooth might require extraction are blocking other teeth from coming in, not leaving space for orthodontic treatment, or has deteriorated beyond repair. Extraction procedures are also commonly performed for wisdom teeth. An impacted wisdom tooth comes in at an angle and not straight through the gum line. Impacted or partially impacted wisdom teeth can cause problems, like infection or cause damage to the adjacent teeth, and are often removed.
Dr. Bakshi has extensive experience with extracting teeth that cannot be saved. They can utilize 3D imaging to see vital landmarks such as the sinuses, other teeth, and nerves to help with more demanding extractions when needed.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Before extraction, Dr. Bakshi will give you a local anesthetic to numb the area where the tooth will be removed. Once the tooth has been removed, the area may be sealed with dissolvable or removable stitches. You do not have to worry about getting dissolvable stitches removed, as they will dissolve over time. If removable stitches are used, Dr. Bakshi will determine when they should be taken out.
Post-Surgical Care
After surgery, you should relax, place gauze pads over the area and replace them regularly, take painkillers as prescribed, and eat only soft foods until the area is healed. Avoid smoking, using a straw, physical activity, touching the area, and lying flat, as these will delay the healing process and prolong recovery time. The removed tooth may be replaced by a dental implant, dental bridge, or denture. Dr. Bakshi will discuss these options with you further.
